Cartridge Repair and Replacement

Faucet cartridges (Cartridge Repair) regulate the water pressure and temperature that flows through the faucet’s spout. The faucet may have a single or double handle, depending on the model. The cartridge component of a single-handle faucet is housed within the stem or body. A leaky faucet is a common problem every house faces at times.

There are several reasons for the leakage of the faucet cartridge. There are mainly two types of faucet cartridges i.e. single-handled and two-handled and different models employ different types of plastic or brass-body cartridges.

We Can Help

To start and stop the flow of water, the handle of a single-handle faucet elevates or lowers the cartridge within the faucet body. Both hot and cold water flow into the same cartridge, and the combination and temperature are controlled by turning the handle. Two-handle cartridge faucets work similarly to single-handle cartridge faucets, but there are two cartridges in this design, each regulating the flow of hot or cold water. Instead of pulling the cartridge up and down, the handle twists it. We will discuss the causes of leaky cartridge faucets, the tools & material needed to fix them, and the method to solve this problem.

Issues with cartridge (when cartridge doesn’t work properly)

  • O-Ring failure.

One of the main causes of the leaky faucet is the issue with the O-ring. The failure of the o-ring may cause water to leak.

  • The cartridge is damaged.

If the cartridge is damaged and it does not work properly, water leakage may result.

  • Valve Seat Corrosion

Corrosion of the valve seat can also cause a leaky faucet.

  • Washers that have worn out.

The washer may be damaged and worn out after several years of use which may result in a leaky faucet.

  • Seals that have worn out.

The seals of the cartridge may get damaged after a long period of usage or other reasons which may cause the leakage of the water.

  • Pressure of water

The leakage may result due to the high water pressure in the pipeline. High water pressure may damage the cartridge.

  • Loose Parts

The faucet cartridge components may get loose due to excessive use or defects that may result in water leakage.

Cartridges can be found in:

  • Faucet
  • Kitchen Sink
  • Bathroom Shower

How to identify Cartridge brand?

It is the easiest when the brand name is printed directly on the faucet face. Examine the faucet’s bottom, handles, and the circular plate behind the handles, though. If you come across a brand name, visit the manufacturer’s website and ask for help.

Ways to Fix Leaky Faucet Cartridge

If the problem is not complicated, you can fix the leaky faucet on your own. Before starting the fixing process, you must identify the problem. The faucet cartridge is used in different parts of the household. We will discuss the method to fix the leaky cartridge

  • Remove the handle

Firstly, remove the handle of the faucet by rotating it.  This can be difficult since the screw that keeps the handle in place is typically hidden under a detachable plastic cover plate or cap. This cap can be located on the top of the handle, on the sides, or on the side of the faucet handle body as an exposed Allen-head set-screw.

  • Unscrew the faucet

Based on the faucet model, the cartridge will be kept in place in a different way. In most circumstances, it will be secured in place within the faucet body by a retaining nut. When the handle is removed from an older, simpler faucet, the cartridge is held in place by a big nut.

  • Take off the trim sleeve

Pull The trim sleeve that covers the cartridge. The trim sleeve depends on the faucet model.

  • Remove the bonnet nut

After pulling off the trim sleeve, unscrew the bonnet nut. Bonnet net depends on the model. You can unscrew  some bonnet nuts with your hands whereas some need a strap wrench. Rotate the bonnet nut counter-clockwise.

  • Pull the cartridge

A cartridge retaining clip is found on some faucets. Remove the clip with care and pull the cartridge. In some cases you may need a puller. In this case, follow  this process:

  • Fix a puller to the cartridge
  • Tighten the puller to the cartridge
  • Rotate the puller
  • Pull the cartridge
  • Install a new cartridge:

Replace the cartridge with a fresh one. The new cartridge is straightforward to install; just make sure it’s correctly aligned as it goes in. Apply a light layer of heatproof silicone plumber’s grease to all rubber O-rings and rubber seals on the cartridge.

  • Reassemble the component of the faucet:

If the cartridge tabs were not perfectly aligned with the retaining clip notches, you may need to rotate the cartridge a little to get the clip firmly inserted. It should click into place if you rotate the cartridge slightly while putting the clip into place with the white plastic tool.
