PRO Vacation Checklist for a Home’s Plumbing/Drain System

Going on vacation is always exciting, but it’s important to remember to prepare your home before you leave. One aspect that shouldn’t be overlooked is your plumbing and drain systems. Here are some jot notes to keep in mind when preparing your residential plumbing and drain system for vacation mode:

  • Turn off the main water supply: Turning off the main water supply can prevent any water leaks or damage while you’re away.
  • Check for leaks: Before you turn off the main water supply, check your faucets, toilets, and pipes for any leaks.
  • Empty the pipes: Once the main water supply is turned off, turn on all your faucets to empty the pipes of any remaining water.
  • Insulate pipes: If you live in an area where the temperature drops significantly, consider insulating your pipes to prevent them from freezing and potentially bursting. Check for open, and exposed areas like in the basement, and garage.
  • Clean your drains: Use a drain cleaner to remove any build-up in your drains. This will prevent any clogs from occurring while you’re away.
  • Clear gutters: Clearing your gutters of any debris can prevent any water damage to your home during a storm.
  • Turn off appliances: Turn off your dishwasher and washing machine to prevent any leaks or malfunctions.
  • Set your water heater to “vacation” or set an eco mode if available: Setting your water heater to vacation mode can save you energy and money while you’re away.

By following these jot notes, you can ensure that your plumbing and drain system is prepared for your vacation. Enjoy your trip with peace of mind knowing that your home is safe and secure.
